      Welcome to U of T Scarborough!

      An anchor institution in the eastern GTA, U of T Scarborough combines the intimacy of a close-knit campus, the breadth of the liberal arts and the depth and rigor of one of the world’s best research universities.       Established in 1964, U of T Scarborough offers over 250 programs in the Arts, Sciences and Business and is U of T's Co-op campus.  With Co-op available in over 80 programs, students can take advantage of valuable work experiences and get a head start on their future. University of Toronto Scarborough students enjoy an increasingly accessible 300-acre campus in the Highland Creek Valley, one of Toronto’s most spectacular natural settings. 

      U of T Land Acknowledgement

      We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

    2. Highland Hall

      Highland Hall (HL)

      Opened in 2018, Highland Hall houses faculty and administrative offices, student services, lounges and event and study spaces.

      This building features two state-of-the-art tiered classrooms, a technologically advanced Centre for Teaching and Learning for academic skills training, Student Commons, and multi-use space that can accommodate up to 600 students at exam time.

      It is also the home to Social Sciences departments, Registrar’s Office, Admissions & Student Recruitment Office and the International Student Centre. A central location for campus student services, this building is a focal point for community access and engagement. Highland Hall brings together Social Sciences departments under one roof, including teaching and research in political science, sociology, anthropology, human geography, and critical development studies, facilitating collaboration and engagement among faculty and students.


      Highland Hall also features the Hub, a space where students create and launch new business start-ups. It is U of T Scarborough’s entrepreneurship incubator. Students work in the Hub to build products and create businesses, and they are guided through the process by coaches and faculty mentors.

       
    3. Academic Resource Centre

      Academic Resource Centre (ARC) Opened in 2003, the Academic Resource Centre (ARC) combines almost all of U of T Scarborough’s academic resources together under one roof. It includes the Academic Advising & Career CentreMath & Statistics Learning Centre, Writing Centre and a library to name a few. The library is part of the U of T Library system which is the largest in Canada and third largest in North America. The library at U of T Scarborough offers:
      • 100,000+ titles, digital media sources, and access to the online library system
      • Computer workstations, study carrels, and private study rooms
      • Free inter-campus delivery for items located on other campuses
      • In-person reference support
      • Makerspace with 3D printers and other resources for students.
      The ARC also houses the largest lecture hall at U of T Scarborough, with a maximum capacity of 500. Some first-year classes will be held in the ARC.
    4. Student Residence Centre

      Student Residence Centre

      The Student Residence Centre is a central residence community space where residence students can study or relax and hang out with friends. You will find a piano, big screen TV with cable, pool halls, and study space.

    5. Joan Foley Hall

      Joan Foley Hall
      Located next to the Residence Centre, Joan Foley Hall is home to apartment-style units housing six people. Each of the four floors has a common room facing the scenic Highland Creek Valley for social activities as well as study space during exam periods. Across from the lounge on each floor are laundry, garbage, and recycling rooms.
       
      All apartments come fully furnished and are equipped with two bathrooms, full kitchen, living/dining room, and storage room. Accessible housing is available. Each single bedroom (approximately 150 square feet) includes a bed, chair, desk, and wardrobe.
       
      Utilities and campus wireless internet are included in your residence fees. Additional costs may include meals (optional meal plan available), telephone, cable and laundry. Laundry rooms are accessible 24 hours a day.
       
      Students select to live in one of the three gender rooming types offered: all gender, same gender women, or same gender men housing. An LGBTQ+ option is also available.
       
      Students may submit roommate requests on the StarRez Portal.
       
      Residence advisors are housed in each hall to lead the community and offer support. The Residence Life team are available 7 days a week to provide resident assistance.
    6. Townhouse Residence

      Townhouse Residence
      Townhouse living at U of T Scarborough provides the opportunity to stay, study and engage in one of the most scenic parts of campus while also living minutes away from academic buildings and facilities. There are 13 townhouse halls spread across the North Residence (Juniper, Koa, Larch, and Maple Halls) and South Residence (Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Dogwood, Elm, Fir, Grey Pine, Hickory, and Ironwood Halls). 
       
      Each fully-furnished, self-contained unit contains 4-6 bedrooms (approximately 80-100 square feet), 1-2 toilet rooms, 1 shower, a full kitchen, storage area(s) and a living room/dining room.
       
      Utilities and campus wireless internet are included in your residence fees. Additional costs may include meals (optional meal plan available), and laundry.
       
      Townhouse bedrooms are fully furnished with a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet space. Laundry rooms are accessible 24 hours a day. Accessible housing is available.

    7. Social Sciences Building

      Social Sciences Building (MW)

      Originally built in 2004 as the Management Building (hence the “MW”). After the Instructional Centre opened and Management relocated, this building became the home of Social Sciences at U of T Scarborough. Today, Social Sciences departments are located both here and in Highland Hall.

      This building is a great place to find a quiet study space. You may have a few classes here with lecture halls ranging from 80-150 persons capacity.

    8. Sakura Garden

      Sakura Garden

      The Sakura Garden, opened in 2005, is a joint venture between the University of Toronto and the Japanese Sakura Committee as a celebration of culture, goodwill and friendship between Canada and Japan.

      Our garden is a part of a larger initiative that includes over 3,000 trees planted in Ontario through the Sakura Project.

      In total, U of T received a total of 120 cherry trees from this project.

    9. Humanities Wing

      Humanities Wing (HW)

      The Humanities Wing is part of the original buildings built in 1964 by John Andrews, the same architect who designed Toronto's most iconic building, the CN Tower. This building's architecture style is known as Industrial Brutalism. This type of concrete architecture was promoted by Le Corbusier and is known as brutalism from the French term “béton brut,” which translates to raw concrete. When the Humanities Wing was first built (together with the Science Wing), the Closed-Circuit Television (CCT) system used for teaching was considered state of the art and drew international acclaim to the campus.

      Here, you will find classrooms, study corrals, professors’ offices and lockers to store your personal items. You may rent a locker through the Scarborough Campus Students' Union.

      The H-Wing also has a greenhouse on its roof and is connected to the Sakura Garden 

      Marketplace

      The Marketplace is a central place for students to gather, sit down and have food together. It offers a diverse range of food from all over the world, which reflects the diversity of the student, staff and faculty population on campus. You will find Chopsticks, Pizza Pizza, Paramount Fine Foods, Healthy Kitchen, Bento Sushi, Bhoj, pasta, salads, burgers, and Booster Juice to name a few vendors inside the Marketplace! Students can use their meal plan here and receive 18% off on all purchased meals.

      H-Wing Patio

      The patio is a favorite hangout spot for students, especially in the spring, summer and fall. It backs onto the UTSC Valley Trail. Click next to learn more about the trail!

    10. UTSC Valley

      Valley Land Trail

      Re-opened in Fall 2019, the four-season Valley Land Trail connects our campus to the beauty of the Highland Creek Valley in a winding, accessible trail. At 500-metres long, the trail descends a 19-metre slope at no more than a 5% grade, ensuring that as many people as possible can access the beautiful natural feature of the Highland Creek Valley. Features of the trail include:

      • A seven-tier amphitheater on one end, elevated in several places allowing people to feel as though they are right in the treetop canopy
      • A charging station for motorized accessibility devices.
      • Multiple raised lookout points with accessible seating.
      • Over 300 LED lights built in to the handrails for evening strolls.
      • Emergency alert station, connecting directly to Campus Community Police.
      • Intimate amphitheatre seating built into the hillside at the trailhead, creating a natural space for outdoor lectures and class activities.
      • Edible, native plants along the path such as raspberries and strawberries.
      • Many types of birds and animals can be spotted from the trail, including white-tailed deer, red fox, chipmunks, groundhogs and squirrels.

      Highland Creek Valley

      U of T Scarborough is set on 300 beautiful acres, which includes the Highland Creek Valley.The Highland Creek Valley houses our own Community Garden which is a living laboratory for students, faculty, and staff who are gardening enthusiasts. U of T Scarborough’s Community Gardens set a trend as the first of its kind at a university campus in the Greater Toronto Area. Gardeners enjoy going off-line to relax and converse, nurturing relationships along with vegetables, herbs and wildflowers. The Valley includes:

      • The creek and bridge
      • Green space and hiking trails
      • Baseball diamond, football field, tennis courts
      • Home turf for U of T Varsity Baseball Team

      Be sure to take a walk down to the Highland Creek Valley when you are on campus!

    11. Meeting Place

      Meeting Place

      The Meeting Place connects the Science, Humanities and Bladen Wings with an underground tunnel. It is a central hub of student activity. The space is available for use by all members of the U of T community, including students and staff.

      Throughout the school year, the Meeting Place hosts many events including:

      • University and career fairs

      • Student life and experience fairs

      • Clubs week

      • Concerts and performances

      • Cultural shows and arts festivals

      • Seminars and workshops,

      • Annual Graduation Awards Ceremony

      It is the home of the student-run Gallery 1265 art gallery, Starbucks and our Campus Safety & Security office.
      Campus Safety & Security

      U of T Scarborough offers a wide range of safety and security programs and initiatives which include:

      • Our campus police and security patrol 24/7/365 (walk, bike and car)
      • Emergency phones located throughout campus

      • Lone Worker program - Radios that connect folks working alone directly to Campus Police

      • Police escorts to/from any location on campus

      • Lost and Found office located at Campus Police Office

      Hollywood North

      Toronto is known as “Hollywood North,” with a number of productions calling our campus home. You might have noticed the Meeting Place and the campus in some scenes from the following movies, TV shows and music videos:

    12. Science Wing

      Science Wing (SW)

      The Science Wing is the oldest U of T Scarborough building (together with Humanities Wing). John Andrews, the same person who designed the CN Tower, designed the Wing. It has been praised numerous times for its “brutalist-industrialist” architecture. Andrews didn’t want to compete with nature with his design; he wanted minimal details in order to blend in with the surroundings of the valley. The Science Wing includes:

      • Labs, lecture theatres and study corrals
      • Professors’ offices (fourth and fifth floors)
      • UTSC Weather Station
      • Culinaria Research Centre
      UTSC Weather Station

      The Department of Physical & Environmental Science monitors our own weather station at U of T Scarborough that informs us of the weather on campus. This comes in handy during those heavy snow storms, and determining if the campus should be remain open or close. Receive weather updates by following @UTSC_weather on Twitter.

      Culinaria Research Centre

      Students use the lab as part of the Food Studies program (an interdisciplinary field dedicated to understanding where our food comes from and how it shapes our bodies and identities.) Many are taught in the Culinaria Research Centre with an emphasis on experiential learning. Faculty and students in the program often host classes for on campus students and staff to join in and learn how to cook meals from all over the world, which reflect the cultures of the diverse student population on campus. 

       

    13. Science Research Building

      Science Research Building (SY)

      Opened in 2008, the Science Research (SY) building is complete with many classrooms, lab spaces, research spaces, faculty offices and a large atrium/foyer for special events. It includes:

      • 16 research labs
      • 250-seat lecture theatre
      • Leigha Lee Browne Theatre (LLBT)
      • Research-specific floors: 
        • Environmental chemistry
        • Plant and microbial biology
        • Development psychology

      U of T Scarborough is home to 10 Canada Research Chairs! In recent years, we’ve won numerous awards and research grants from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). 

      SY is the home of much graduate study research in the Sciences. If you take Psychology in first year, you may be a part of this research. Some of the labs also accept many undergraduate research assistants.

      Leigha Lee Browne Theatre (LLBT)


      A 120-seat “black-box” style theatre which can be converted according to the needs of the theatrical production. Many annual theatrical and musical productions are hosted at LLBT. 

      Solar Walk 

      A model solar system installation includes ten planet markers placed across the campus at the exact location of each celestial body on July 1, 1867, the day of Canada’s confederation. Each marker includes descriptions of the planet and details its position in our solar system.

    14. Bladen Wing

      Bladen Wing (BV)

      Named after former Economics professor Vincent Bladen, the B-Wing houses:

      • U of T Scarborough Bookstore
      • Doris McCarthy Gallery
      • Small Classrooms
      • Rentable lockers
      • DSA (Departmental Student Association) offices
      • SC:OUT office (LGBTQ+)
      • Computer Labs (fourth floor)
      • Admin offices (fifth floor)
      • Tim Hortons
      UTSC Bookstore

      All course textbooks and course materials are available at the U of T Scarborough Bookstore. New and used books are available for purchase, as well as books for rental. Also, the bookstore offers student prices on laptops and tablets, cell-phone plans and handsets, stationary and U of T gear! 

      Computer Lab

      There are over 500 computers on the 4th floor; three of the labs are open 24 hours a day. The student help desk is also available here. If you need help troubleshooting your wireless connections or have issues with your U of T email or other online resources, visit the help desk for assistance. 

      Doris McCarthy Gallery (DMG)

      The Doris McCarthy Gallery hosts free art exhibits throughout the year and is open to the public. They also collaborate with the student-run Gallery 1265 to promote student work. Be sure to check out the unique art exhibits when you are on campus!

       

    15. Arts and Administration Building

      Arts and Administration Building (AA)

      Opened in 2005, the Arts and Administration building contains a 300-seat lecture hall, smaller classrooms on the second floor (typically used for tutorials), studio space and multi-functional rooms on the third floor, and administrative offices on the first and fourth floors. 

      Many studio spaces offer rooms for music, painting, sculpting and rehearsals. 

      The 300-seat lecture hall is one of the largest lecture theatres on campus. It’s also the only theatre with five entrances, and often plays host to memorable and high- profile events and concerts.

      The AA building is also the home to the Office of the Principal & Vice-President, the Dean and other executive and administrative offices

      AccessAbility Office

      The AccessAbility Office offers services for students who have documented disabilities (temporary or permanent). Services include, but are not limited to:

      • Individualized accommodation and counselling services for students with disabilities
      • Referrals to university and community resources
      • Access to assistive technology and multiple format materials
      • Addressing campus accessibility
      • Increasing awareness in the university community

      The AccessAbility office also offers several programs that benefit students. These programs include:

      • Summer orientation programs
      • Volunteer notetaking
      • Exam support
      • Mobility assistance
      • Assisted technology
      • Confidentiality support

      Rock Walk

      The Rock Walk (outside) imports the geology of Ontario to U of T Scarborough, enhancing the quality of instruction and overall community experience. This landscaped display of the principal rock types found across the province will become an innovative outdoor laboratory, inspiring students in environmental science courses and fine arts and media studies.

    16. Student Centre

      Student Centre (SL)

      The Student Centre is the central hub of student activity on campus. Most people pass through the Student Centre at least once a day. It is owned and operated by the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU).  

      Here, you will find another space to dine and hang out. Food vendors include 
      Subway, Pita Lite, Hero Burger, KFC, Asian Gourmet, and Rex's Den which is a student-run restaurant. You will also find Nasir's Hot Dogs just outside the Student Centre if you are craving some hot dogs and fries.

      You will also find the Office of Student Experience & Wellbeing, the SCSU office, Health & Wellness office, Campus Dentistry, Women's and Trans Centre, meeting rooms, and Fusion Radio (on-campus student-run radio station).

      Office of Student Experience & Wellbeing
       

      The Student Centre is also home to the Office of Student Experience and Wellbeing. They offer many volunteer programs, leadership development opportunities, and mentorship programs, as well as resources to help you start up a student club. There are well over 200 clubs on campus to choose from and you can add to that if you want to start a brand new club!

      The UTSC Student Experience App is the official student app from the Office of Student Experience & Wellbeing at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The UTSC Student Experience App is a convenient way to access student services on the go and connect with campus events.

      Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU)

      The SCSU represents the student population in all university matters. They provide student services, fight for students’ rights and freedoms, and help make student life a blast! 

      They provide advice and support on university matters, provide students with supplementary health care (SCSU Health & Dental Plan), are the source of student discounts (Metropass, movie tickets, etc.), hold events and parties, and offer work and volunteer opportunities.

      Health & Wellness Centre

      Located on the second floor, students can make appointments (using their health cards) to see nurses, physicians, counselors and psychologists, as well as get flu shots, prescriptions, yearly physicals, etc. at the Health & Wellness Centre.

      Women's and Trans Centre


      Located on the second floor, the Women's and Trans Centre raises awareness and promotes education about feminism, provides resources and references on women’s issues and provides an open and anti-oppressive space.
    17. New Student Residence

      The nine-storey student residence located on Ellesmere Road, is expected to be completed by fall of 2023. It will be built to Passive house standard, showcasing U of T’s commitment to advanced sustainability and reducing our ecological footprint.

      The building will include 750 beds with single and double occupancy, separated into unique communities, an integrated dining facility and server, mixed-use spaces for workshops style learning and lounges, and an outdoor roof garden and terrace.
    18. Instructional Centre

      Instructional Centre (IC)

      The Instructional Centre opened in 2011 and is the home to Management, Math & Computer Sciences, and all Co-op programs. Designed by some of Canada’s top architects, the building features; solar panels on the roof and is built to top sustainability standards. The building features:

      • 7 lecture halls, with seating for 350, 120, 80 and 60.
      • Computer Science Labs: All new full-feature computer labs that run Linux OS; there is also a microprocessor lab for electronic hardware experimentation
      • The BRIDGE (Business, Research and Innovation) lab, featuring a New Venture Program (NVP) to prepare students for careers as entrepreneurs or as corporate innovators.

      The BRIDGE

      The BRIDGE is a multi-purpose academic space that spans teaching, study, research, and experiential learning for business, finance, and entrepreneurship. It is a partnership between UTSC’s Department of Management and the UTSC Library.

      Since opening in September 2018, it has provided a hands-on learning experience for students interested in Management disciplines and their real-world applications, while supporting the research needs of UTSC faculty. 

      Co-op 

      U of T Scarborough is the “Co-op campus” of U of T. Students can gain six to 12 months of paid work experience by the time they graduate, and earn anywhere from $2,900 to $7,000 per month (on average, depending on program). Co-op programs are offered in Arts, Science and Business programs. Co-op students have access to some of the top employers in Canada and around the world. Some examples include IBM, Procter & Gamble, Ernst & Young, Ministry of Education, Parks Canada, Google, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). 

      Not only do you get paid and gain experience in your field, you are also building valuable skills and a strong network of professionals. All these benefits gained from the Co-op program will prepare you for the future upon completion of your U of T degree!     19. Environmental Science and Chemistry Building

      Environmental Science & Chemistry Building (EV)

      The Environmental Science & Chemistry building houses two disciplines in the Department of Physical and Environmental Science with research and teaching laboratories, an analytical instrumentation centre, office and meeting space.

      The facility will help train the next generation of experts to address the scientific challenges presented by environmental issues such as groundwater pollution in urban settings, restoration of degraded environmental systems, climate change and rising sea levels.

      It also includes student study space, a librarian office, a campus safety office, seminar rooms and multi-purpose spaces.

    20. Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre

      Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC)

      Toronto hosted the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games. As a part of this, a brand new, state-of-the-art, $205-million modern Aquatic Centre was built right here at U of T Scarborough!  The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is being funded jointly by the provincial government, the University and students, and opened in September 2014. This is one of the most exciting aspects of our growth! There are:

      • 2 Olympic-sized, 50-metre, 10-lane swimming pools
      • a 10-metre diving tank
      • a 35,000 sq. ft. two-storey multi-sport gymnasium and 200-metre 3-lane multi-purpose indoor track
      • a cardio studio with the latest fitness equipment and a separate weight room with hundreds of free weights, in addition to trending strength and conditioning machines
      • 3 group fitness studios
      • 3-storey, 41-foot rock climbing wall that changes frequently

      Canadian Sports Institute Ontario (CSIO)

      The CSIO is designed to enhance the daily training environment of Canada’s high-performance athletes and coaches. The CSIO has a network of seven locations across Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Toronto, Montreal, and Atlantic Canada.

      You may even spot an Olympian training during your workout or fitness class at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre!

      Athletics & Recreation Office

      The Athletics & Recreation office is one of the hubs of activity on campus and a gathering place for those pursuing a healthy active lifestyle. They offer many fitness programs, classes and field trips for students to live a healthy lifestyle while having fun! 


      Fun Fact

      The 2017 Invictus Games were held at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre for the seated volleyball, wheelchair basketball and swimming competitions.

      Athletes and fans got a royal treat when former U.S. President Barack Obama joined Prince Harry, along with former Vice-President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden to watch Team USA take on France in wheelchair basketball.
