Woodrow had the distinction of being the campus' first dormitory with central heating, a luxury for which students were charged an additional $10 fee. It was one of four buildings designed by Charles C. Wilson, who served as university architect for seven years until the position was abolished in 1915. Named for James Woodrow, a former president of the university, the building, located just east of Preston College, was used as a hospital during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Wings added to the college were originally named for William B. Burney and Yates Snowden.
