The original Wade Hampton, built in 1924, was the first residence hall built exclusively for women; female students had been allowed to live on campus in 1918 in an existing wing of DeSaussure. With Sims and McClintock, Wade Hampton is part of the Women's Quad on Greene Street. By the mid-1950s, state officials decided Wade Hampton was too small and worn out; it was demolished and replaced with a new building of the same name in honor of Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general and former S.C. governor and U.S. senator.
