With university enrollment at nearly 500, construction of the first new dormitory on campus since 1848 began in 1912 on a Pendleton Street site behind DeSaussure College. Wings on either side of the main building, then named Coker and McBryde, were added in the late 1930s as part of a New Deal building program. The main dorm was named in honor of James H. Thornwell, an 1831 graduate of South Carolina College.
