Like Preston College, nearly half of the funding for Sims was derived from the Public Works Administration, a New Deal program during the Depression. Sims was the second women's residence hall on campus, built beside the original Wade Hampton on Greene Street. When McClintock was built in 1955, the women's quad was complete. The three-building complex underwent a yearlong renovation in 2013-14 that resulted in LEED Gold certification and joined the buildings together with connector wings. Sims is named for James Marion Sims, a 19th-century alumnus and physician.
