Built partially with the New Deal's Public Works Administration funding, Preston College became the university's first and only residential college in 1995, modeled after the residential colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. A faculty principal lives in an apartment there, and Preston residents share evening meals together with faculty associates in a designated dining hall in the west wing of the Russell House. The residence hall, which faces Greene Street across from the Russell House, is named for William Campbell Preston, a lawyer, legislator and graduate and former president of South Carolina College.
