In 2014, BGSU was awarded a grant from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund of the Ohio E.P.A. for the purchase and installation of two “green roof bike racks”. These structures are also featured in the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District of downtown Columbus, Ohio, and feature “live” roof growing, green panels on top of a covered steel bike rack. The structures demonstrate how a green roof functions, particularly in their ability to eliminate storm water runoff and demonstrate natural absorption and processing of rain water. Additionally, the bike racks encourage bike riding year round and provide a covered location for students to park. Locations include the northwest side of the Wolfe Center for the Arts, and in front of the Student Recreation Center. The fifty percent match for the grant funding was covered by the BGSU Student Green Initiatives Fund. This is a fund composed of an optional fee that many students pay each semester which is dedicated to green and sustainability projects on campus.
