After his career as a double-sport athelete (also serving as tight end on the AU football team), Thomas was selected as the 9th pick of the 1989 MLB draft for the Chicago White Sox. He went on in his 19-year career to also play for both the Toronto Bluejays and Oakland Athletics. He was named MLB Most Valuable Player twice and was inducted in 2014 into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
