Centering African Experiences - Malawi
Summer 2025
Spend three weeks in Malawi, known as the "warm heart of Africa" ...
- Option 1: learning qualitative methods (techniques for collecting non-numerical data to understand individuals' attitudes, beliefs, and motivations, used broadly in the social sciences and the fields of health and education) and honing your research skills through hands-on community engagement.
- Option 2: engaging in hands-on experience that links theory to real-world media practice, creating content for media houses and organizations and building skills in storytelling and audience engagement, while exploring the political, economic, and cultural implications of cross-border communication.
This program places emphasis on experiencing and understanding everyday life from the perspective of a local population. Students will spend significant time most days engaging with community members, and use these interactions and insights to develop ideas for crafting and communicating unique reflections of lived experience. The majority of the program takes place on Likoma Island, where you will be housed in rustic chalets directly on the beach. Snorkel in the warm waters or learn to scuba dive in you free time! Later in the trip you will meet with Malawian students, academics, and journalists to exchange ideas. We round out the trip with a safari, visit to a pottery lodge, and an epic hike to view ancient rock art.
