The Cook Carillon is the heart of the Valley Campus in Allendale.
This striking 10-story clocktower was completed in 1994, and made possible through the generous support of longtime university benefactors Peter C. and Pat Cook, for whom it is named. Here are some clocktower facts:
- The Cook Carillon houses 48 bronze bells, cast by the renowned Royal Eijsbouts bell foundry in the Netherlands, with the largest bell weighing nearly 3,000 pounds and the smallest just 14 pounds
- The carillon chimes every quarter-hour and plays the university’s alma mater, “Hail to Thee, Grand Valley,” at noon.
- In addition to its automated system, the bells can be played manually by a carillonneur from a keyboard located within the tower, blending tradition with modern technology in a uniquely resonant way.
- GVSU is one of two institutions in the U.S. to have two fully-functioning clocktowers.
