The iconic green space located at the heart of the College of Charleston campus, Cistern Yard has welcomed generations of students to campus as a venue for convocation, spring commencement, concerts, and other campus events.
Framed by Randolph Hall, Porter's Lodge, Towell Library and St. Phillip Street, Cisern Yard takes its name from the 40,000 gallon cistern built in 1857 to supply drinking water and control flooding in the basement of Randolph Hall. A long-honored commencement ceremony tradition, graduating students "cross the cistern" to receive their diplomas.
