Gardner is best known for its beautiful patio, a favorite location for study and for picnicking among students. Gardner is also the site, several times per year, of Residence Life’s Movie on the Quad events, where a giant screen is erected behind Gardner and students escape the stress of the semester and enjoy free popcorn, snowcones, and a movie.

History of O. Max Gardner Memorial Hall

Two great philanthropists of Cleveland County, NC, Former NC governor O. Max Gardner and wife Fay Webb Gardner gave $10,000 to secure 25 scholarships to then Boiling Springs Junior College in 1942. Later that year, the junior college became Gardner-Webb Junior College to honor the Gardners’ gift. After O. Max Gardner passed away in 1947, his family announced that they would give $100,000 through the Gardner Foundation as a memorial. The money would be used to build a student union. The O. Max Gardner Memorial Student Union and cafeteria opened Easter Sunday 1949.
