The James Branch Cabell Library provides an array of library services on the Monroe Park Campus. Built in 1970, the library has been renovated and expanded and offers more than 165,000 square feet in which to study, collaborate, discover, create and conduct research. Staff members are available anytime the building is open to support research and use of space.

Amenities designed to serve all of VCU’s users include The Reflection Room for meditation or prayer, gender-inclusive restrooms, a lactation room, an accessible work station for the visually impaired, and, soon, a Sensory Room designed to meet the needs of neurodivergent users.

Special Collections and Archives contains nearly 60,000 volumes in special subject areas, including Virginia and Richmond history and literature, popular culture and graphic arts. A world-class Comics Arts Collection and Book Arts Collection provide inspiration for study and creation. The department also houses the official records and archives of VCU and its predecessor institutions (The Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute).

The Workshop offers a comprehensive suite of resources and spaces designed as an ecosystem for creating and learning. Equipment and spaces are free and open to all members of the VCU community. The Workshop circulates a collection of audiovisual equipment for loan and also offers in-house tools and spaces including a makerspace for hands-on creativity, audio/video studios and an XR/advanced multimedia lab, computer stations with a variety of software, and other equipment in support of scholarship, research, presentation, and invention.

The Technology Services IT Support Center is located in the basement in room B-30. The staff provide comprehensive computing support to faculty, staff, and students, including support for VCU websites and accounts, test scanning, and AV equipment loans.

The library provides many options for student study space, including more than 60 study rooms, a Silent Reading Room, the Graduate Student and Faculty Reading Room, a lecture hall, an outdoor terrace, and a variety of study spaces for group and silent study.

A full-service Starbucks is located on the main level.
