        History of Stroup Residence Hall

After Mae Cline Stroup’s husband, Rush Stroup, passed away in 1930, Mrs. Stroup turned their Eagle 5 & 10 stores into an empire. She served on G-W’s Board of Trustees beginning in 1933. She was the first woman to chair the Board of any Baptist college in North Carolina. She was an advocate for missions and education. Her philanthropic efforts helped fund the construction of Stroup Residence Hall which is named for her.
