Building Number: 664
The Welcome Center is located in a one-story building on the east end of campus adjacent to the administration building. The building was built and opened in 1953 with an initial investment of $234,237.
The 9,138-square-foot building first housed an infirmary where a full time nurse lived in the building and tended to ill students. The building was built as a conventional hospital with bathrooms between each room. Physicians would make house calls there for the students. In the mid-1970s, the building became a health center run somewhat the way ours is today.
In May 1983, the nursing program was moved to this building from the science building. During that time, the nursing center was renovated to establish faculty offices, a nursing skills laboratory, and two classrooms. To accommodate the increasing numbers of students, faculty, and staff, the nursing center went through renovations twice since 1989. In 1994 the classes were converted to a large nursing skills laboratory and the former skills lab was converted to faculty offices. Nursing classes were held in other buildings on campus during the 1993-94 academic year. In Fall 1996 a large portion of the lower level of the Tarleton Center was renovated for the nursing program. This area housed faculty and staff offices, a student computer lab, two large classrooms, one conference/classroom, and a lobby area.
In December 2010, a new Nursing Building was built on the corner of Rome Ave. and Vanderbilt St. This provided the Office of School Relations to take advantage of the space made available and expand upon it to provide prospective students and their families with a more homely feel as they explore Tarleton's Stephenville campus. Renovations began in September 2011, and School Relations moved out of the Tarleton Center into the new Welcome Center in June 2012. Oftentimes, perspective students will meet at the Welcome Center before their private tours of the campus begin.
