Drums and Data
Located near the School of Data Science, this art piece was created by Fletcher Benton and donated by his daughter, Ashlie.
Fletcher Benton was a prominent American artist and sculptor of large-scale steel abstract geometric works and known for his kinetic art. This impactful sculpture serves as an artistic centerpiece for the area, complimenting the design elements of the nearby San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
This sculpture is one of three pieces in Benton’s Drum Rhythm series. The drum and drumsticks are representative of the “lyrical playfulness that is at the heart of many Fletcher Benton works,” according to Michael Roby, director of San Francisco-based Fletcher Benton Studio.
Fun Fact: The steel sculpture is 18-foot tall and weighs 3,500 pounds (about half the weight of an elephant)
