McCrary's Bog
Dr. Anne B. McCrary recognized this low-lying wetland area during her tenure at UNCW as Professor Emeritus of Marine Biology. It is home to some amazing creatures! When flooded, the location contains clam shrimp and fairy shrimp that have only been found in a few areas near Wilmington. The only known areas for these species are where Walmart is now and the Landfall Golf Course. These small crustaceans hatch, grow, mate, lay eggs, and die all in the course of a few weeks. There may be no flooding here for weeks or months, but after a heavy rainfall, the shrimp hatch, and the cycle begins again.
