Next door to the Multicultural House, Neil House hosts the Black Student Center on the lower level, which has a large conference room, a lounge featuring a hand-painted mural by a local Black artist, a fully stocked spice and sauce cabinet, and a barber’s chair and work space for Carleton’s visiting barber. Neil also hosts Freedom House, Carleton’s interest house designed to serve the African American and many African Diaspora communities, on the first and second floors. The building is named after the late Rev. Earl Neil ’57, the second African American graduate of Carleton, noted Civil Rights and social justice activist, and former Carleton trustee.
