Common Name: Norway Spruce
Scientific Name: Picea abies
Family: Pinaceae
Origin: Europe
Growing to heights of 100-150 feet, and 40-60 feet in cool temperate zones. This tree has a conical shape with the main branches slightly upturned and growing laterally. The shorter branches that stem off the main branches become more pendulous as the tree matures. Its needles are dark green and are attached in a spiral pattern along the branches. Cones are cylindrical shaped and grow around 9 inches long. When fully mature, these cones hang downward due to their weight. There are many known cultivars of Norway spruce and, given their basic growth patterns and common characteristics, it can be difficult to differentiate between cultivars.
