        1. 20. Amur Cork Tree (Phellodendron amurense)

          Common Name: Amur Cork Tree
          Scientific Name: Phellodendron amurense
          Family: Rutaceae
          Origin: Northern China, Korea, Japan

Firstly, this tree has been labeled as a noxious species and experts would recommend that it not be moved or grown outside its native range. The amur cork tree is a small tree growing to heights of 30-40 feet tall. The mature canopy is round and broad with lower branches extending horizontally and some of the lowest ones sweeping to the ground. The bark color is a mixture of gray and brown that, on older trees, develops a corky character. Also with age, the bark becomes progressively more rigid with the onset of corky bark. Flowers are fairly inconspicuous and are yellow to green in color.  They appear in panicles in the later spring and, when pollinated, they produce pea-sized fruits. The leaves of this tree are shiny and dark green with an opposite and odd-pinnate compound growth pattern. The leaves consist of 5-11 leaflets with each leaflet being around 4 ½ inches long.
