Common Name: Serviceberry
Scientific Name: Amelanchier arborea
Family: Rosaceae
Origin: Eastern North America
The serviceberry is a small tree growing up to 15-25 feet high in cultivation and can reach up to 40 feet in nature. The canopy shape is usually round, which makes it attractive in the garden landscape. Leaves are fine-toothed and ovate with a green coloration. Flowers appear from March-April growing in clusters before the foliage arrives. Flowers are white with 5 petals. Small, round, purple to black edible berries form after flowering and are an especially favorite food for birds. Also known as Juneberry, many people make jams and jellies from the berries.
