Common Name: Eastern White Pine
Scientific Name: Pinus strobus
Family: Pinaceae
Origin: Eastern United States
The eastern white pine grows 50-80 feet in cultivation and up to 100 feet in its natural habitat. This large pine tree can be easily grown as a hedge or for other ornamental purposes. Young trees start off with pyramidal shaped canopies, similar to a Christmas tree, but as they mature they develop a more oval shape. Needles are around 5 inches long and are dark green with some appearing slightly blue. Cones are brown and cylindrical, growing to sizes of around 4-8 inches long. These trees, specifically between the 1700’s-1800’s, were readily used for lumber.
