Common Name: Japanese Zelkova
Scientific Name: Zelkova serrata
Family: Ulmaceae
Origin: Eastern Asia
A medium to large tree, Japanese zelkova grow to an average height of 50-80 feet. Their leaves appear lime green to dark green, oblong-elliptic in shape with a pointed tip, and serrated margins. The Japanese zelkova produces inconspicuous green flowers that develop into fruits called drupes, a fleshy fruit with a single stony pit that contains the seed, in the fall. Due to this species resistance to Dutch elm disease, they have been recommended as a replacement for American elms.
