The paw paw is a small to sometimes medium sized tree that grows to heights of 15-30 feet. The tree is classified as an understory tree, hence, giving rise to its large thin paddle-shaped leaves. The leaves are light green in color with an elliptical shape. They grow in clusters and usually are 6-12 inches long. That’s a pretty big leaf! Oftentimes, when you spot one of these trees in the landscape, you will find many other individuals clustered around. This is due to the tree's ability to propagate clonally through its roots. Many people do not believe trees in the Eastern United States can grow significantly flavorful fruits. However, the paw paw tree is an exception with its edible oblong-rounded fruits. Designated Ohio’s state fruit tree, these tree’s fruits are generated from small dark-purple flowers that bloom in the spring. Some describe the flavor of the fruits as having hints of banana, mango, and pineapple.
