The Viz Lab focuses on emerging digital technologies and techniques, working to integrate design and scientific visualization to help scientific data reach and resonate with the broader community. The Viz Lab is funded in part by a UMD alum and Emmy Award winner who was a director on the Warner Brothers series Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Johnny Bravo, as well as many other animated series and features.
The Viz Lab works in tandem with the Motion and Media Across Disciplines (MMAD) Lab, which is a 3D motion capture and high definition video production studio that offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research and creative activity, including ergonomic design, gait analysis, virtual reality, and the latest innovative techniques in video production and sound engineering. Both the Viz Lab and the MMAD Lab provide opportunities for students to collaborate with faculty on exciting research projects that extend beyond what they can learn in the classroom.
