Self-Reliance offers three students a unique opportunity to live, for a full year, in the first house Middlebury’s Solar Decathlon Team entered into the national Solar Decathlon competition. The competition challenges college students to create sustainable and high-quality housing that mitigates climate change.
Self-Reliance placed fourth overall in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon and first in the market appeal, communications, and home entertainment contests.
The house resembles a Vermont farmhouse but utilizes features like sustainably harvested wood from local forests, recycled insulation, and triple-paned windows, as well as an impressive sound system for entertaining.
Students who live in Self-Reliance are expected to give tours of the house and are even given a budget to host events promoting the house.
