      1. Alexander Twilight Hall

Alexander Twilight Hall is named after the first African American to earn a degree from an American college or university when he graduated from Middlebury in 1823. Twilight spent the rest of his life as an educator, a pastor, and the first African American member of the Vermont General Assembly.

The four-story building, built in 1867, originally served as a schoolhouse for Addison County before the College bought it in 1984. Many locals still recall attending classes in the rooms that now house the departments of classics, philosophy, and teacher education.

Students can make use of the many classrooms, large lecture hall, and sprawling green that stretches toward the rest of campus, complete with a large swing set.
