After fighting alongside Ethan Allen as a Green Mountain Boy, helping to establish Middlebury as a town, creating several successful businesses, and representing his neighbors as a member of the state legislature, Gamaliel Painter set his sights on founding a college.

While Painter had no more than a common school education, he saw the benefits of a college to establish Middlebury as a commercial and cultural center, and provide a place for local Vermonters to get an education.

His elegant and spacious house, built in 1802, sits at the gateway of the town he worked so hard to promote, the community he worked so tirelessly to build, and the College he had the vision to found.

Today, in the same building where Painter himself promoted the College, our Office of Communications and Marketing continues to share what is happening at Middlebury with the rest of the world.
