A short walk from central campus, you’ll find the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at 46 South Street. CNS is a world-leading Middlebury College research and teaching center focused on weapons of mass destruction, the diffusion of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, and other major international security challenges. It has offices in Vermont; Washington, DC; Monterey, California; and Vienna, Austria.
CNS Vermont connects Middlebury students and faculty directly to this global network through classroom instruction; paid research assistantships and internships; speaker events featuring scholars, policymakers; and diplomats; and opportunities to work with CNS experts.
Founded in 1989, CNS is the largest nongovernmental organization in the United States devoted exclusively to research, teaching, and training on threats from weapons of mass destruction. The Vermont office brings that expertise directly into Middlebury College's academic life while creating opportunities for students and faculty to engage with CNS colleagues and programs across the Center’s other offices.
The building includes dedicated space for CNS classroom instruction, lectures, workshops, and other programming. It also houses offices for CNS faculty and experts and a workspace for Middlebury undergraduate research assistants working with CNS colleagues in Vermont and across the Center.
