Address: 112 S Williams St
Description: Residence, President of the University of Vermont. This gracious home was designed in the colonial revival style in 1914 by Wilder and White, Architects, of New York City for Dr. William Englesby. Dr. Englesby practiced medicine in Burlington from 1899 until his death in 1933. When his widow died in 1956, the house was willed to UVM. For the next two years it served as a dormitory for twenty-seven women students.
When a new president of UVM, John Fey, arrived in 1958, the university remodeled the house to serve as his residence. Englesby has since been occupied by nearly all succeeding UVM presidents. The facility includes a basement and three above ground levels, totaling approximately 9,000 sq.ft. Enclosed formal gardens and lawn space extend nearly a full block beyond the south face of the residence.
