Schwartz Hall was originally known as “Dorm ’85.” In 1990, the building was named in honor of Benjamin David Schwartz, long-time advocate and friend of UNCW. Mr. Schwartz served a term as Mayor of Wilmington during the 1970s civil rights unrest. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives (1972-1978) and State Senate (1978-1980). As a member of the Wilmington College Board of Trustees (1958-1969), he helped locate and purchase the land on which UNCW now sits. He also was on the UNCW Board of Trustees (1981-1989), serving as Chairman (1986-1988).
