Tulane's first outdoor classroom is located between Gibson and Tilton Halls. Equipped with a chalkboard and bench-style seating, this space offers a natural setting for learning, a departure from traditional classroom technologies. The project, led by Undergraduate Student Government director of sustainability John Alexander and supported by Tulane’s chapter of Design for America, began planning in fall 2016. The outdoor classroom was named the Pierson Patio in honor of alumna Catherine Deming Pierson.
