            Israel Jr. is home to the School of Environmental Sciences.

            The Merryl and Sam Israel Jr. Environmental Sciences Building was completed in 1999; HGA architects. The building houses a 52,000-square-foot research center designed to have a minimum impact on the environment. The facility includes non-toxic paints and finishes, recycling stations and state-of-the-art solar-activated lighting systems. Additional "green" features include natural ventilation, interactive sun reflectors, which bring sunlight into various rooms, and recycled concrete and wood.

             

            Merryl Israel Aron, a talented golfer and shrewd businesswoman, played a pivotal role in the development of Tulane's science center. Alongside her husband Sam, she restored a historic mansion in New Orleans' Garden District, later donating it to Tulane while retaining the right to live in it. Through innovative financial arrangements, she ensured both her continued residence and substantial contributions to Tulane, culminating in the sale of the property to support the construction and maintenance of the Israel Environmental Sciences Building. Merryl's philanthropic creativity and foresight have left a lasting impact on Tulane's campus and its community.
