Built in 1860, the “white house” (now the Norris–Wachob Alumni House) served as the residence of Pennsylvania College President Henry L. Baugher. The Civil War had already affected Baugher personally when his son Nesbitt, a Union officer and college graduate, died of wounds after the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. During the Battle of Gettysburg, Baugher and his family cared for 18 wounded Union soldiers in their home and successfully hid one officer from Confederate searches during the town’s occupation. Shortly after the battle, the house also hosted James F. Crocker, a former Pennsylvania College student serving as a Confederate officer, who briefly returned to town and dined with the Baugher family despite the ongoing war.
